Meiresonne’s middle-sized stack lurked in the shadows for most the game, but as the bubble approached he started building his chip arsenal. Jean, who finished 2nd, had a huge chip lead throughout most of the tournament. But her stack gave way to pressure from S.Braswell (3rd place) and Meiresonne as the stacks eventually even out between the three players. This year’s bubble-boy (M.Sudduth) again finished on the button with Sumner taking 4th.
McClary goes from last to first, picking up the chip-n-chair bonus, bounty bonus, cash bonus and finally the victory bonus placing him on top of the Gundam Point Leader Board. At first it looked like Decker and Hoffman were going to dominate, however, Hoffman eventually fell to McClary’s onslaught, while Decker mange to hold-on to second place. Discouraging to the field, the top 4 point leaders took the top four spots in the Deuce-to-Seven No-Limit event. Father Braswell bubbled while his spawn managed a 3rd place finish. It remains a very tight race for the top 4 spots in Gundam Points, and there is a lot of tournaments yet to come.
McClary, after a slow WSOG start, storms back quickly taking the chip lead (for the Fast-Break bonus) and never relinquishing it for a 1st place finish in Event #04, leaping 4 spots in a tie for 3rd place in Gundam Points. Meanwhile, M.Braswell picked his spots to survive to 2nd place, taking the WSOG Point lead. Decker, getting knocked out very early in the tournament (by T.Sumner, who was awarded the Bounty Point) slipped from 1st to 3rd in Points, while S.Braswell, who finished in the middle of the pack… managed to stick in 2nd place in Gundam Points. As always, J.Meyer, once low on chips climbed back for a 3rd place finish, however, it was P.McIntosh who had the roughest start and earned the Chip & Chair bonus by managing to go from 12th place to 4th place and finish in the money.
Finally, there’s a non-Braswell Gundam point leader, as the unlikely dismal tourney player, M.Decker, pulls in front for the first time in… forever. It took several re-entries for not only Decker, but also several others before everyone settled down for a fast-and-furious 4-seat event. Sumner took the quick lead with a massive chip stack early (and fast-break-bonus), while went from 9th to 1st collecting the chip-n-chair bonus. Meirsonne bumped-off S. Braswell for the bounty. The first short-handed (4-seat) event created quite a bit of churn, as almost 1/2 the field crashed-and-burned and had to re-enter, including 2 double re-entries. Decker jumped from 3rd place to first, while both Braswell’s just slipped one spot into 2nd and 3rd. Both M.Sudduth and T.Sumner shot up multiple spots and McClary slipped to the middle of the pack (but still well within range to make up the distance with <20% of the points distributed.
The Braswell’s are back at it with younger Braswell taking 1st and elder taking 3rd sandwiching T.Sumner, who finished 2nd. So far the Braswell’s are dominating 2024, each winning a bracelet in the first two WOSG events which puts them in 1st (S.Braswell) and 2nd (M.Braswell) in Gundam Points for the year. T.Sumner, who took a quick lead (but not as quick as T.McClary, who won the fast-break bonus), amassed a huge amount of chips early (nearly 1/2 of the chips at the table) and kept them until it got to heads-up with M.Braswell by knocking out the other Braswell for the Bounty point. M.Braswell had fought his way from 7th to 1st (nabbing the chip-n-chair bonus on the way) and traded blows with T.Sumner until the final shot was fired, knocking Sumner out. Sudduth made up some ground from his dismal performance in Event #02 by bubbling in Event #02.
It sure feels like a new year, with Decker not finishing in the bottom two-spots and M.Sudduth (Godel) going out in last place. McClary (after having a strong 2023) finishes strong (2nd place) in the first WSOG event of the year. But it is S.Braswell who dominated the event when it got into the money, knocking out the last 3 players remaining. Let’s see how he does with a Bounty on his head!
It was a game of huge hands, with straight-flushes beating nut-flushes, boats beating boats and quads appearing out of no-where. Plenty of bad-beats and coolers to go around.
It was the largest player pool in Gundam Poker history, with 29 players competing for a $1,160 prize-pool. An anonymous player named, “Anonymouse” jumped to a quick chip lead taking the Fast-Break Bonus. However, S.Braswell after taking a major hit early, starting methodically building his stack moving up 20 positions (25th to 5th) earning the Chip-n-Chair bonus. As almost always happens on the bubble, Wetteland had to endure a horrible beat, getting her Aces cracked on the bubble. However, some early big stacks (J.Thomas, StrueD and Heine) never let up and all ended up in the money, with the exception of L.Grayford, who had a big stack early… lost all but 5 Big Blinds right when the bubble was about to burst, but managed not only miss bubbling-out, but ended up in 2nd place. But during the late stages it was the D.Heine show who amassed nearly 2x larger than the 2nd stack at one point, and seem to avoid running into a bad beat. J.Thomas, after knocking out M.Sudduth for the bounty, did not avoid a bad beat and got knocked out in 3rd. D.Strue took 4th place and S.Braswell (working is way from 25th) took 5th place. As always, the tournament grinder J.Meyers was in the money in 6th. Heine’s victory in the large pool gave him an astounding 66 Gundam points and a $420 prize-pool.
Another battle was taking place for the Gundam Championship. With the large prize-pool it was possible for both Braswells, McClary and D.Shull to catch the current point leader (M.Sudduth). The 2nd place M.Braswell only needed to finish 8 spots ahead of Sudduth, while McClary needed to finish 14 spots ahead. S.Braswell essentially needed to finish 1st with Sudduth almost dead last to invoke a 1st place Championship finish. It looked possible for a while as Sudduth was on a short stack, but he recovered with T.McClary still in a good position to pull off the upset. But neither M.Braswell nor T.McClary could hold on, leaving Sudduth on top of the 2023 Gundam Mountain as the 2023 World Series of Gundam Champion.
It was the second (maybe third) WSOG event where M.Sudduth found himself short-stacked early (this time getting the chip-n-chair bonus) and bailed out with double-ups from big bluffs or weaker hands piling into his monsters (though, no call is easy when your tournament life is at risk.) The assassin (aka J.Sudduth) started heads-up with a dominate chip-lead but couldn’t quite get her kill shot stabilized allowing her spawn to crawl into first and stay there and collect his own bounty. Streu ended up in 3rd place while S.Braswell was in 4th. Sumner got off to an early start earning the fast-break bonus.
In typical Meyer fashion, he rises from ashes, in a large 16 player field, by taking a low-stack and grinding it out for a victory. This time knocking the current Gundam Point Leader, SudduthM for the bounty. Meirsonne grabs the chip-n-chair and 3rd place, while Lamb manages to cash in 4th place. Sumner got off to a fast start grabbing the fast-break bonus as well as the bubble-bonus.
It was an epic battle, with Decker blasting away 3 buy-ins and Jean taking out the Gundam Point Leader pretty early in the tournament. The Gundam Point Leader, M.Sudduth, got off to a quick start earning the Fast-Break-Bonus, however, shortly after that he ended up getting waxed by his own mother (aka ‘the assassin’) who picked up the bounty bonus and ended up with the victory as well. Meanwhile, S.Brawell battled with a short-stack long enough to pick-up the Chip-N-Chair Bonus. Towards the end it looked like Meiresonne was going to dominate, but T.McClary soon took charge and the chip lead, until late in the game when J.Sudduth and B.Meiresonne took some big pots from McClary. He eventually fell to Jean, who finally managed to NOT split a few pots with him, earning her another WSOG Bracelet.
